How Do Search Engines Determine Which Organic Listings are Displayed?

Each search engine sends programs called Spiders out onto the web - the Spiders crawl the internet, sending copies of all the webpages they find to the search engines' huge data bases called indexes. It is from these indexes that search engines pull the information presented as search results.

Each search engine uses different criteria to evaluate the billions of pages within its index. Some of the criteria that are used by all the major search engines in evaluations are:

  • The ability of the search engine to 'read' the content on the website.*
  • The quality, quantity and originality of the content.
  • The number, quality and type of links to the website from other websites.
  • The use of relevant keywords in the title and meta tags as will as within the content.
  • The presence of 'black-hat' SEO techniques.**
* Some website features such as Flash, Content Management Systems, Frames, etc. - cannot be easily read by all search engine programs - and as a result, some search engines might not be able to 'see' the content on your website. Additional care must be taken when using these features.

** 'Black-hat' SEO techniques do not enhance the experience of the website visitor, they are soley designed to trick the search engines - websites can be penalized by search engines for the presence of these 'tricks'. Targeted Search Engine Marketing does not recommend these practices.
